N-Spec can analyze several types of patent-related documents, with different processing options available depending on the document type:
Patent Applications
- Complete patent applications (.docx format preferred over PDF)
- Applications should use standard U.S. patent application section headers
- Can handle specifications up to 100+ pages, including complex technical content and mathematical equations
Office Action Responses
- Complete OA response documents
- Must include a claims section with proper header (e.g., "CLAIMS:")
- Different quality metrics are applied compared to patent applications (e.g., part naming consistency isn't checked)
Claims-Only Documents
- Standalone claim sets are supported
- Must include a header (e.g., "CLAIMS:") to distinguish from other numbered lists
- Can be used for quick claim analysis before incorporating into full specification
Best Practices:
- Use .docx format when possible for most reliable results
- Include clear section headers to help N-Spec identify document structure
- For claims sections, use explicit claim numbering rather than Word's automatic numbering
- Save and close documents before uploading if making iterative changes
